Somerville House - The Landmark in Education
Somerville House is recognised as the landmark in education. Our name is synonymous with academic excellence and co-curricular programs that are recreationally, socially, and spiritually stimulating. Our highly experienced teachers aim to educate students to become confident and independent young women, conscious of their strengths, and capable and willing to contribute to the greater good of society. We aim to develop each student to be the best she can be in all she undertakes in her quest for personal fulfilment.
In the supportive and warm boarding environment, students are encouraged to balance structure and routine with the freedom to explore and develop individually. Your daughter will develop qualities she will take with her for life, using the talents nurtured and skills honed during her time as a boarder, to deal with the rigours of life after school.
Students come from a diverse range of backgrounds and nationalities. They travel not only from around Australia, but also from around the world, to take advantage of our superb academic, cultural and sporting facilities and to be part of a community that supports and embraces them during their school years and for the rest of their lives.
As the new home for our Year 11 and 12 boarders, open in 2017, the Bauer Building will offer the luxury and space of twin share bedrooms for our Year 11 Boarders, and singular bedrooms with shared ensuites for our Year 12 Boarders.
These new facilities have been designed to accommodate the best practice in boarding, meeting the necessary balance between personal privacy and cohesive communal living. The natural progression of our Boarders as they reach their senior years, requires greater privacy, and quiet space to meet the increased needs of their academic studies.
Boarders in Years 9 and 10 live in Craig Hall; while on the level above, our Years 6, 7 and 8 Boarders in Mavis Holden, enjoy a modern, air-conditioned complex which occupies an entire floor of our purpose-built boarding facility. Craig Hall boarders have more independence and, in keeping with their growing academic workloads and experience, more opportunities to arrange their own time and activities.
Organised games and activities and interaction with students from other boarding schools are also featured. And for some quiet time – boarders enjoy reading, chatting to the girl next to them or their best friend 60,000 kilometres away online, or enjoying the School’s central location in the cultural heartland of Queensland, with South Bank, the Queensland Performing Arts Centre, the Queensland State Library, Museum and Art Gallery, and Brisbane’s CBD, literally on our doorstep.
Somerville House parents are always welcome to visit, and when they do, the offerings of Brisbane’s cultural and social life are there for them too!
